Our team at Complete Rehab has extensive experience in treating and managing neuropathy. We have been working with neuropathy patients since 2005 and have treated over 8,000 people over the years. In our experience, people’s ideas about neuropathy can be limited, as the only symptoms most people know about (assuming they know about neuropathy at all) are pain, tingling, and numbness.
In this article, we will go over a few examples of lesser-known symptoms of neuropathy you should be aware of.
- Weakness – One neuropathy symptom that many people are not aware of is muscle weakness. Neuropathy affects the nerves, which means it can interfere with the signals from your brain, causing symptoms such as pain and tingling, but also causing your muscles to misjudge how much force they need to exert. If you find yourself feeling weak and unsteady, or if you start to drop things frequently, we encourage you to come to our clinic.
- Digestive Problems – Neuropathy doesn’t just affect the feet and hands, although those are very common sites of neuropathic pain and numbness. It can also affect the nerves controlling your internal organs, and can thus affect the unconscious processes they control, such as digestion. If you are having digestive problems, such as diarrhea, constipation, or vomiting, then you may be suffering from neuropathy.
Sexual Dysfunction – A third lesser-known symptom of neuropathy is sexual dysfunction, as the condition can affect the nerves connected to your sexual organs. If you are experiencing problems in this area, they may be connected to your neuropathy.
