Types of Neuropathy Treatment

We at Complete Rehab have been treating neuropathy since 2005, and we have helped over 8,000 patients. Neuropathy most commonly occurs as a result of an underlying condition, such as diabetes, so much of neuropathy treatment focuses on managing that condition. However, there are treatments we can prescribe to address the neuropathic symptoms themselves, and in this article, we will go over a few examples.

Types of Neuropathy Treatment

  • Pain Medication – As you might expect, one possible neuropathy treatment involves using pain killers, either prescription medication or over-the-counter options. These medicines will relieve neuropathic pain and allow you to live more comfortably.
  • Vitamin Supplements – One possible cause of neuropathy is a vitamin B12 deficiency, so one treatment option is B12 supplements. In many cases, patients are so deficient in this vitamin that they need to receive supplements through injections, rather than oral pills, as injections are the only effective way to raise their B12 levels.
  • Off-Label Medicines – A third neuropathy treatment option involves using medications “off-label.” This means prescribing a medication that is not specifically approved for treating neuropathy, but has nonetheless shown to be effective for managing the symptoms of this condition. Medications are prescribed this way all the time, so there’s nothing to worry about. Some examples of off-label medications used for neuropathy treatment include anti-convulsants and antidepressants, both of which have helped many patients find effective relief.
